FAQ

General Questions

1. What is MyMessyBox?

MyMessyBox sparks kids’ natural creativity and curiosity while saving time for busy parents. Every box includes all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme. Projects include arts and crafts, messy-sensory activities, imaginative play and more. Our themes are designed to give preschoolers exposure to new materials and new concepts that encourage hands-on learning and fun. We deliver hands-on fun right to your door!

2. For what ages is MyMessyBox appropriate?

MyMessyBox is designed for preschoolers ages 3-6 and tested by kids to ensure that they are developmentally appropriate, fun and universally liked by both boys and girls. We take a lot of care to design every theme in a way that is open-ended so that although children across the age range may have different outcomes, they will all enjoy interacting with the projects and materials. Some parents choose to introduce messy-sensory play to their kids as early as 1 year old and we would recommend parental guidance as you guide your little ones along in doing the activities.

3. Why Messy-Sensory Play?

Messy-Sensory play is important for our children, who are natural explorers. MyMessyBox provides our children with the opportunity for observation and manipulation through a hands-on learning experience. Through the manipulation of materials, our children will improve their fine and gross motor skills while using their senses to discover and explore their environment. Children will develop their cognitive skills through messy-sensory play by observation, experimentation, exploration and manipulation of the sensory materials. Messy-Sensory play also provides children with the opportunity for learning basic concepts such as shapes, colours and numbers, as well as more complex concepts such as counting, sequencing, sorting, constructing, and much more.

More benefits:

·         Enhance developmental skills

·         Endless opportunities for creative play

·         Great sensory processing integration experience

·         Provide opportunities for self-directed play.

4. How can MyMessyBox play help my child's development?

There are many ways MyMessyBox can help your child learn.

1.       Develop co-ordination and control- MyMessyBox gives children the opportunity to explore materials using their hands.

2.       Develop language and communication skills- Children will learn new words related to what they observe and experience.

3.       Develop creativity and imagination- Regular opportunities for free play allow children to create their own activities in their own way.

4.       Extend children’s knowledge and understanding of the world- Children can investigate objects, textures and a range of materials.

5.       Develop concentration and problem-solving skills -MyMessyBox gives children the opportunity to work things out themselves and learn through practical experiences by being absorbed in the activities.

6.       Develop independence and confidence- Children are able to decide how they want to play by using the materials in the way that they choose. This builds confidence because the child is in control.

5. Are you afraid of cleaning up?

Don't be afraid of a little clean up at home. After having a great time digging into The Messy Box, you can invite your child to clean up with small dust pans and brooms.

Depending on the age of your children you can make them responsible for their actions. If anything falls out of the sensory box, let the children know that they need to pick it up later on. You can explain that the more that falls out the less they will have to play with.

When using water or wet materials, adults can help by placing clean towels at the bottom of the container so no one slips. For small dry material like beans, you can keep a handheld vacuum cleaner close by for quick cleaning, most times children would ask to help vacuum and you can vacuum together.

6. Will cleaning up be difficult?

Depending on the age of your child, you can make them responsible for their actions. If anything falls out of the box, let your child know that they need to pick it up later on. You can explain that the more that falls out, the less they will have to play with. When using water or wet materials, you can minimise mess by placing clean towels at the bottom of the container. Always have some towels for your kids to wipe any huge spills up to prevent slipping.

After having a great time digging into MyMess Box, your children can help clean up. For small, dry material like beans, you can keep a handheld vacuum cleaner or a small broom and dustpan for quick cleaning. Most of the time, children love to help with the cleaning up. In short, don't be afraid of a little clean up at home and always have children wash their hands after playing.

7. How do I use MyMessyBox?

Our activities are designed such that they can take place on several occasions. Remember not to rush your child in any activity. Let their creative and imagination flow!

  •     Introduce the theme using the craft activities in the Creative Pack.
  •     Experience sensory play through the Explorative Pack using the tools in the toolkit.
  •     Add on the contents in the Active Pack to the Explorative Pack to maximise learning and     imagination as and when you think your child is ready.
8. Why should I allow my children to play with food?

We understand and value the importance of food and how precious it is, however, we feel that the benefits of food play in early childhood outweigh the reasons to keep it hands off, so with that, we would like to share a list of simple ways to allow your little ones to learn through food play. Pretend food can be used for role-playing and imaginary play. However, when a child is able to explore the different textures and looks of actual food, all five senses are stimulated at once and a child is more likely to retain what they are learning.

Our approach to all of our toys and resources is to re-use and recycle as much as we can. We weigh the food play choices that are in MyMessyBox. Some food play has benefits and some don’t. We try not to include anything that only has a short play time span. Hence, we strongly recommend against using cooked food, and prefer to stick to dry food items like uncooked pasta and beans as they can be stored and used many times. Ziplock bags are excellent for storing materials like beans and pasta. Always recycle the ziplock bags found in MyMessyBox to keep your home organised.

Being one of the basic natural items, food is the safest and most common item our children can handle and learn with. If you are uncomfortable letting your kids play with raw beans, you can always wash them and sun them before play.

9. Must I supervise my child when he/she is playing?

Yes, you never know what might happen when you are not looking. MyMessyBox comes with small parts which may be a choking hazard for children under the age of 3.

Research shows that the average child under the age of three only mouths for about 30 minutes a day, but since there’s no way to predict which 30 minutes those are going to be, parents constantly need to be on their guard. As young children naturally put things in their mouth throughout the preschool years, we strongly urge parents and caregivers to stay constantly vigilant.

10. What do I need to do for the Active and Explorative Packs?

Step 1: Grab a plastic box which is large enough for your child to get his/her hands inside in order to have a good dig around.

Step 2: Add the main 'ingredient' from the Explorative Pack for your child to feel and manipulate.

Step 3: Mix in some 'treasures' from the Active Pack for your child to discover.

Step 4: Provide some tools for your child to extend the play and learning possibilities.

Step 5: Invite your child to play. Sit back and let your child lead the way!

11. Other Tips and Suggestions:
  •  Depending on the age of your children you can make them responsible for their actions. If anything falls out of the sensory box, let the children know that they need to pick it up later on. You can explain that the more that falls out, the less they will have to play with.
